One of the biggest draws to this part of Central Oregon is the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Formed from geologic activity half a million years ago, today the landscape has obsidian rock flows and lava fields that can be explored many different ways.

October may be one of the best times to hike Paulina Peak. It’s a six-mile out and back trail that is popular in the summer, but as crowds and temperatures cool off in the fall offers more solitude. The hike is rated as moderate, beginning by winding through the dense forest and ending with expansive views from the summit.

Nearby Paulina Lake is well-known in the summer for swimming, but in late fall you can also make it there and dig out your own hot spring. Find them from the Paulina Lake Loop hiking trail.

A unique way to get to know the area is with Outriders Northwest, a touring company that will take you and your family on an unforgettable ride throughout the lava country. On the Lava Lands Experience tour, take the wheel of the off-road vehicle and drive along trails through lava rock and high desert terrain while spotting local wildlife. Follow the professional guides on the tour and experience the region in a whole new way. It’s a thrilling yet safe experience that couples and small groups can do together.

Anglers will want to pack their trout rods to test their luck in the alpine lakes of the region before they close for the season. East Lake is a popular place to find trophy browns on the fly. Soak in the views while you explore the lake and hook the variety of fish that live here.
